Avantages
Great flexibility of research. Within the thesis advisor's scope, there's a good degree of freedom to work on whatever you like.
Inconvénients
The structure is very disorganized. Can easily be left stranded without knowing what to do. Off-work hours, weekends, and holidays are usually not observed.
