Avantages

The good stuff: Big plans, big hopes, big dreams. The group is definitely doing "the Lord's work" as they say in information gathering, analysis, and sharing about campaign funding issues and the problems we have inflicted on ourselves in the US. Fairly congenial people trying to work together and make gold out of very little straw. They do pretty much succeed.

Inconvénients

The bad stuff: Really high expectations of everyone with no reasonable plan to support staff to get there. Very little in the way of continuing education, although in this realm, which changes constantly and is updated (software) every 90 days, it should be mandatory. Easily distracted upper management with a lot of attention to what other somewhat similar (and yet very distinct) groups are doing, with a great deal of "tail wagging the dog." Mission creep is not resisted. Release and launch dates are not firm and held, which makes a lot of projects (and getting good results) really difficult.

Avantages

MapLight is full of decent human beings who care a lot about the mission.

Inconvénients

The focus at ML is on expanding the engineering team/programs, so everything admin is a bit of an afterthought. There has been a decent amount of turnover in ops with little in the way of solid process creation, so systems are not well organized. Currently, no staff members in decision making positions have an actual background or skillset in operations. What this means for anyone joining Ops is that they will likely have an outsized impact if they are willing to dig in and speak truth to power, which may be a welcome challenge for some, but can be isolating and a source of burnout. I worked at ML for over 2 years and only had one formal review, no raises, no COLA.

Thank you for taking the time to write this. We are always open to feedback and constructive input. We recognize the importance of streamlined processes and systems in order to increase efficiency for staff, and while we have created improvements over the past couple of years, there are still areas we can grow in. We are expanding our Operations role to full-time from part-time to help address this and always welcome collaborative work towards systemic improvements. Thank you again for your feedback.
