When you have your interview for HCR you are promised the world in respect of career progression, aslong as you work hard. For a junior, you are made to sign a contract stating that you will be salaried, and will work 9am-5pm, this is where the fun begins, as when you go to leave the office at 5pm, the seniors and partners are close to spitting at you, because how dare you have a social life or other non work based commitments, whether this is a doctors appointment, children, or extra curricular. You are essentially forced to sit at your desk until 10pm, 11pm or sometimes even later (early hours of the morning) because the partners like to believe they are so important and have so much work, that they can’t possibly leave the office. However let’s not forget, that for each day you do this, you do not get paid past 5pm, and you still have to arrive at 8am in the morning for a briefing of some kind, which means you are doing very long hours, for very little rewards. It’s also important to mention that you get no training and are just expected to pick up from the seniors when they are “too overwhelmed” to deal with their workloads, and if you make an error or do not understand, do not even bother to ask anyone for fear of having your head bitten off, as remember they are very “important” people, with no manners particularly when it comes to those beneath them. Also be prepared to take the blame for mistakes made by seniors, as it’s easier to blame a junior than it is to admit that you a qualified legal worker made a mistake. When you do get thirty seconds of “you” time, you will likely be forced to go to a marketing event, or to a presentation of some kind that can run into the evening, so there really is no escape, and again you do not get paid, if you say no, this will blacklist you amongst the toxic partners who enjoy slagging off juniors very openly during the workday infront of other team members. - so the trick is, just do as you are told. Remember after all of this, your level of commitment and the fact that you barely recognise your family anymore, will not mean you are guaranteed career progression, because again these decisions are toxic and fixed. So to summarize, your job is to pick up from where the partners and seniors dump their workload on you, so that they can go for a lunch or to a party (sorry marketing event) and you can sit in the office all day and night, getting complained at, and not getting paid.
