Because you are paying into the pension, you are not paying into social security and earning social security credits. Also, there is no matching 401k. As a civilian employee, I found career development, training and advancement to be very limited. A toxic environment driven by a disproportionate number of individuals who have never worked professionally anywhere else and are stuck. These stuck individuals can only be described as covetous, unprofessional, narcissistic, tactless and sanctimonious. Your career, skills, and time are too precious to risk getting stuck here.
