AVOID!!! Interview process with huge red flags Group based interview - Covering agile principles through games and a presentation of a game with given rules. Overall the format of the interview very much favoured candidates who were louder and more assertive (incredibly different to other assessment centres I’ve done that incorporate group elements), with opportunity for further one to one’s locked behind this. No initial psychometric or technical assessment is necessary before this stage, instead filtering on personality using this stage, which again is a huge red flag. It’s the first company interviewed at where candidates are picked based upon a narrow subset of skills rather than taking a holistic approach and considering candidate potential in a technical aspect, general aptitude and learning ability: where someone would be able to shine more. Overall would avoid if you are looking for placements that take into consideration a wider variety of skills. Not every “loud” candidate is a good one. In itself, the place looked old and quaint and brilliant to work at. It’s shame that, from a candidates perspective, such a shallow looking process is used to select candidates for placements. My advice to management: Consider introducing a technical screen or aptitude test before the group stage. Ensure facilitators are trained to look for collaboration and logic, not just volume and personality. You are likely losing high-potential engineers with this current format that just as easily meld into teams, but have their ideas retorted by people louder than themselves. Secondly, change the format. It appears previous years have utilised the ball point agile game which allows for a huge disparity between candidates who game out and know a solution coming in, against those who genuinely attempt to come up with solutions on the spot like an actual software engineer.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear you came away from our placement student recruitment day feeling this way. Our aim in all our recruitment activities is to ensure that candidates are given a fair opportunity to show their potential to work with us. We have hosted software developer placement students for over 15 years and around 75% of students on our placements go on to take graduate roles with us. We are proud to offer the opportunities to students from a range of Universities and course types. However, over this period and due to the diversity of applications we receive, we have recognised the need to ensure that we don’t only hold an online interview, but that we offer the opportunity to come to our office, meet our developers and current placement students and spend time taking part in activities designed and delivered by internationally recognised agile practitioners. As these activities are ones we undertake with our own staff and also provide to other organisations on a paid basis, we intend for this to be an experience that would not normally be available to you. We ensure all staff are trained in observing the behaviours, communication and capabilities across all attendees throughout the activities. There were 10 staff involved on the day with each staff member observing a maximum of 2 students at any one time. Staff then collaboratively consult over lunch, taking into account observations from both the larger and smaller group activities and the initial application, cover letter and CV, to ensure each candidate has been fairly considered. We do not provide a preference to particular personality types and the nature of the activities and their use in workplace environments means they are specifically designed to support mixed teams of individuals to ensure this is the case. Our team takes the time after each recruitment event to give constructive feedback to each attendee ensuring they can take something away and to learn from the experience. We hope you received yours and found it useful, but if you would like any further clarifications please do not hesitate to contact us. We thank you for your feedback and will thoughtfully consider how this can help shape future events.
