Grateful to have been there, just as grateful to have left

      Engagement Manager (Previously Associate)

      Houston, TX
      Recommander
      Approbation du PDG

      Avantages

+ People - both colleagues and most clients + Learning opps - both in terms of the consulting toolkit but also for the opportunity to get exposed to different industries, functions and geographies + Option value - great launching pad for career switching (pre-McK, I was in oil and gas in Houston, post-McK I'm in edtech in the Bay Area) + Alumni network - incredibly well-placed and people are actually super-responsive to asks for help + Brand recognition - helps in the jobs marketplace + Travel opps - if this is important to you

      Inconvénients

+ Lifestyle - enough said + Success/failure at the Firm is highly dependent on luck -- a lot really depends on the luck of the draw with respect to staffing. You want to be staffed on the right project with the right team at the right time. The Firm does its best to give you a fair shot, but a fair number of people fall through the cracks. + Nature of consulting -- eventually you might get tired of providing advice and want to actually build stuff. + People are uber-rational -- in MBTI parlance, almost everyone is an ''NT". It creates a very logical / rational culture - you need to make sure you can fit into the culture.

          Avantages

Great pay and benefits (I was in a non-client facing role so no bonus, but total comp was above average to other roles in similar industry) the NY office is beautiful In general, surrounded by smart, driven and mostly caring people who really do want to see you succeed Lots of professional development and learning resources within the company (ie. trainings, certifications, etc)

          Inconvénients

there's a "second-class citizen" mentality that exists between client facing consultants (integrative) and everyone else. Hierarchical organizational structure and bureaucracy- essentially between the Partners/Senior Partners and the rest of the company. If you get on the bad side of a Senior Partner, you have a very slim chance of succeeding. I've seen instances where a consultant had 1 bad experience with a SP and it didn't matter how stellar their work was from there on out or how many other leaders sang their praises. In a lot of ways it's to be expected that SP/Ps carry a lot of authority and influence but some SP/Ps are better than others, and unfortunately, the bad ones tended to be the loudest. So your individual experience varies a lot based on the leader you're working with, and this goes for every level of management from Engagement Manager to AP. Work/life balance - I found that even when I was done with my work, I was essentially "on call". Some days were better than others, and again, depends heavily on who your manager is. You are expected to drink the kool-aid, like, a lot of it. If that's a culture you don't mind, then it's not so bad.
